The Kelly Miller Circus made a stop in Mendon Massachusetts on Tuesday June 24 thanks to the Mendon Lions Club.

Both shows were sold out to a crowd made up of  excited fans who enjoyed watching clowns fool around, acrobats tumble, aerial artists fly, contortionists, pyrotechnics from a human volcano,  and animals performers including high-flying dogs, camels and zebras, and Pinky the world’s smallest elephant.

Lucas, age 5 and Sydney, age 3 were having a great time at the show. Lucas had his face painted like a tiger. When asked what their favorite part of the show was they both said, “Everything!”

Not everyone was happy that the circus came to town. A group  from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Maple Farm Sanctuary of Mendon were holding a peaceful protest from the corner of North Ave and Route 16 to the entrance of Clough School.

Cheri Vandersluis, co-founder of Maple Farm Sanctuary was there protesting the use of animals for the purpose of entertainment. In the video below Cheri outlines her concerns about the abuse of elephants in captive environments and expresses her wish for these animals to be released to sanctuaries. Pam Mazzuchelli, a volunteer at the sanctuary, shows an image of a young elephant being trained. The image was released by a former Ringling Brothers trainer.

  1. Soon Plymouth will join Braintree, Quincy, Revere, Provincetown, Weymouth, and Somerville, Massachusetts in banning wild animals. http://plymouth.wickedlocal.com/article/20140415/NEWS/140417407/?tag=3
If all these other Massachusetts communities recognized animal cruelty when they looked at the science and facts, what reasons does the Mendon Lions Club have for dismissing the proof without first looking at the evidences? http://www.federalcircusbill.org/news/10-reasons-support-traveling-exotic-animal-protection-act-teapa/

  2. In general I choose not to attend and support any circus that uses animals. Kudos to Cirque du Soleil for proving that you don’t need animals who are used against their will to put on a spectacular mind blowing show!

  4. As a Mendon resident, I’m surprised and disappointed that we continue to host the Kelly Miller Circus, which has a long and well-documented history of abusing its animals. Just Google it. Many towns have already banned animal circuses, and I would like to see Mendon among them. We are so progressive in other areas, such as our solar energy and Spanish Immersion programs, and I’m sure we can do better!

  5. Spend 10 minutes just watching these circus animals exhibiting abnormal behaviors you start to go crazy along with these animals. The horses, tigers, elephants are all kept in small pens and constant confinement. This is how these animals live when they are not performing for a few minutes. How is this humane treatment to just watch these animals slowly going crazy and do nothing? Don’t attend animal circuses. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq1Yw2ebE0o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1LgrM7Kw9M
