Letter: Family of former State Rep. Jack Driscoll say he would not have publicly supported any candidate running for office

lettersDear Editor:

We are writing in response to a recent op-ed letter, submitted by George Warren of Whitinsville and printed in several publications, regarding the State Representative race in which Marty Green and David Muradian are the candidates.

In his letter, Mr. Warren made claims regarding our Dad, former State Representative Jack Driscoll, who passed away on July 9th, 2014.  Mr. Warren and his wife were good friends, neighbors, and tenants of our parents for many years, on Linwood Avenue in Whitinsville.  While certainly sincere and well-meaning, Mr. Warren’s letter made statements that need to be corrected.  We feel compelled to respond, in honest memory of our Dad and the unique civil servant that he was.

Mr. Warren’s letter quotes something our Dad said during a social visit at Belmont Manor Nursing Facility, shortly before Jack died.  The inference that a personal exchange of this sort, during a social visit, should be construed as any kind of endorsement for a candidate-elect, is inappropriate.  Our Dad would have never publicly taken sides in such a race, especially one in his hometown.  Given his long history in Whitinsville, he very likely shared an array of different, personal connections with both of these candidates and their respective families.  While the article infers such connections with David Muradian, we know that Dad shared similar connections with the entire Green family, including Marty Green.  What we wish to clarify is that the Jack Driscoll we knew our entire lives would have never publicly stated his support for any candidate running for public office.  It simply wasn’t his style.  Jack would have genuinely wished each candidate the best of luck, and hoped for a fair process that resulted in the most qualified candidate winning.

We wish Marty Green and David Muradian a good, honest race.  May the best man win; it’s what Jack Driscoll would have wanted.

Sincerely,

Monica Driscoll Stuart of Belmont and Sean Driscoll of Cambridge, on behalf of the Driscoll family
