Uxbridge High School opens doors for Chinese and Korean students

Uxbridge High School opened their doors to Chinese and Korean students this past fall through gphomestay. The school partnered with gphomestay to help find caring families who are willing to open their homes for the students to stay during the upcoming academic year.

The visiting students May, Jessica, Yo-yo, and Chanho added valued diversity to the Uxbridge student population. Jessica Johnson, the Residential Manager for the program at Uxbridge High School, said, “I have been so fortunate to work with each of these students, and I have learned so much from them. They have such big dreams and I have no doubt that they will accomplish all of them. They have truly been a joy to work with.”

May, a 10th grader from China, is an honor roll student who received a scholarship to attend WPI next fall. She enjoys spending time with her host family, playing the violin, and bowling. May recently celebrated her 16th birthday with many friends she has made in the U.S.

Jessica and Yoyo, seniors from China, are active members of the chorus. Jessica and Yo-yo both enjoy spending time with their hosts family. Jessica especially enjoys shopping and Yo-yo loves learning all the things she never knew about the United States.

Chanho, an 11th grader, is the first Korean student in the program. Chanho loves anything to do with music; he plays the drums in the school band and is in the drama club. He plans on attending college in the United States and has a dream to start his own company focused on bringing music from Korea to the United States.

The international student program at Uxbridge High School has gone well during its first year and the school has decided to welcome more students for the 2015-16 school year.

Gphomestay offers host families a monthly stipend, referral bonuses for individuals that help us find more host families, and ongoing support from a local residential team. Host families should be able to provide a private bedroom and a supportive home environment. You can choose to host a student for the full academic year, or just one semester.

If you are interested in joining the Uxbridge host family network, please contact Jessica Johnson at jjohnson@gphomestay.com or Tara Bennett at Tbennett@uxbridge.k12.ma.us. You can also find more information at www.gphomestay.com, where you can fill out an inquiry form for free. We look forward to hearing from all the great families in the Uxbridge community who would like to welcome an international student into their home and have a wonderful experience while doing it.
