Upton to hold Special Town Meeting Wednesday 2/11

2 Grove Street Upton

A special town meeting will be held Wednesday, February 11 for the primary reason of seeking the Town’s approval to purchase 2 Grove Street, Upton for the purpose of additional Town Hall parking.

The parcel of land is located across the street from both the Town Hall and Library and will cost the Town approximately $80,000 to purchase. The Town had set aside $100,000 in the renovation budget to upgrade the lot next to United Parish and planned on leasing spaces from the church; that plan did not materialize.  The $80,000 to purchase the 2 Grove Street will come out of the Town Hall Renovation budget.

The Town’s intent is to demolish the building. Upton Town Manager Blythe Robinson said, “We need to make sure the current tenant is relocated out of the building, and then we would come back to the Town for the cost of the demolition.”

Also on the warrant is a request from the Recreation Committee to use $8,500.00 in Community Preservation Act funds to repair the staircase and landing on the Ramsay Building at Kiwanis Beach.

  1. As the building is historic, it will have to go through the town’s demolition delay bylaw review before it can be torn down. We, as a town, need to think carefully before we allow our historic buildings to be lost. Once gone, it’s forever.
