It takes a lot of talent and practice to get to Symphony Hall. Saturday March 21 two Nipmuc students were among a small select group who earned a spot to perform in Boston’s historic and renowned Symphony Hall.

Sophomore Aiden Thieme was selected as first chair trumpet in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) All State Jazz Band.  He was one of 20 high school jazz musicians throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who auditioned and were chosen to be in the band.

Senior Myles Turner was selected to perform in the  Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) All State Jazz Chorus.

Nipmuc Instrumental Educator Simon Harding said both students auditioned back in November at the district level and received a high enough score to audition at the state level in January. They again received high scores in January and were accepted into All State Jazz Band and Chorus. Harding said both groups stayed at the Boston Seaport Hotel and rehearsed from Thursday to Saturday where they culminated their experience with a performance at Boston Symphony Hall.

That same weekend on Sunday afternoon the Nipmuc Jazz Ensemble performed at the MAJE State Finals in Framingham and received a Gold Medal.  Aiden Thieme, Megan Mathieson and Ibby DesRoches received Outstanding Musicianship Awards.  As a result of the gold medal, the group will be participating in the MAJE Gold Medal Showcase sometime in May with the exact date and local TBA. Harding said in the past the showcase has been held at the Hatch Shell but will not be there this year due to renovations taking place.
