There are a number of products available on the market today to called “flushable wipes”, which are hazardous to our sewer system. Wipes are available for babies, toddlers, cleaning and feminine hygiene. While they can be flushed, they cause pumps at the sewer treatment plant to clog which can damage expensive infrastructure. If they clog in the pipes in your home, they can cause a sewage backup into your basement. As often as daily our treatment plant staff must take apart pumps to remove the accumulated wipes which is time-consuming and dangerous and expensive for rate payers if a pump fails. Even if you aren’t connected to Town sewer, flushing them into a septic system can affect its long-term health as wipes take a very long time to break down.
