The Birthing of a Baby Giraffe at Southwick’s Zoo

11010509_1085586124789582_8090661315213141657_oToday Upton Daily and a couple of teens visited Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon Ma where we were surprised to find a brand new three-hour old baby giraffe calf.

The calf was birthed in front of a live audience at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the zoo’s beautiful giraffe exhibit.

Dottie is the mom and as of this afternoon Southwick’s wasn’t sure of the sex.

This brand new calf appears to be very healthy. We we were lucky to see some adorable bonding moments between the baby and the other giraffes and to watch him/her walk around the exhibit and check things out.

Below is a video that Southwick’s posted on their facebook page of the live birth. What is fascinating in the video is how the other giraffes seem to come over and offer support to the mom during the birth process. The next video clip is of the calf walking when we were at the zoo three hours after the birth.
