MU School Committee to discuss next steps after towns don’t agree on budget

uptondaily1pngTonight at 7:00 p.m. the school committee will be discussing what to do next as Upton and Mendon voters did see eye to eye on how to fund the school district. Earlier this month Mendon voters rejected the proposed school budget while Upton voters supported it.

Community members are encouraged to attend tonight’s meeting to ask questions and voice their opinions.

Mendon school committee member Diane Duncan early today requested parents to attend.  “People who are concerned about our schools should come, listen, ask questions and speak respectfully,” Diane posted on social media.

The meeting will take place in the Miscoe Hill Auditorium located in Mendon.

  1. The SC should be requesting a level services budget, which will still require an override from Mendon. This is the right thing to do for the kids and the town, rather than force cuts.

The towns don’t balk at spending nearly two times as much per student for those who attend BVT as we do for those who attend MURSD. Add to that that the SpEd portion of the MURSD budget is higher than it is at BVT, and that makes the ratio even higher in favor of BVT. (And for those who follow the town loudmouth, here’s a fact he’s never mentioned: the BVT Super is paid $200K per year to run one school, and nobody seems to freak out about that.)

So let’s hope that Mendon voters can step up and support MURSD kids the same way we do (and should) support BVT.

And if you don’t care about the kids, supporting your property values is another reason to support the schools. You may not think so, but many families with kids will pay more for a house in a town with a strong school system.
