BOSTON – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) announced on Wednesday that the Senate passed legislation jointly filed by Sen. Moore and Representative Paul K. Frost (R-Auburn) which prohibits the unauthorized sale of veterans’ grave markers in Massachusetts.
“Existing state laws do not protect against the sale of stolen grave markers from veterans’ graves,” said Sen. Moore. “The provisions of this legislation help to ensure that these markers, which honor the final resting place of the Commonwealth’s veterans, are safeguarded.”
The legislation, which passed the House of Representatives last week, establishes a fine of up to $5,000 against any unauthorized individual who sells or attempts to sell a veteran’s grave marker. The bill also provides the possibility of jail time for convicted repeat offenders.
The legislative provisions do not impact services provided by representatives of the Department of Veterans Services, non-profit veterans assistance organizations, and local veterans’ services officers.
