Anne Walker Gutterman, 91

AnneOBITPhoto A-01Anne Walker Gutterman, 91, widow of Arthur Zane Gutterman and formerly of Hopkinton, MA, died Monday, July 11, 2016 at the Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center in Fishersville, VA. 

Born September 26, 1924 in Buffalo, NY the daughter of the late Ruth (nee Walker) and Prescott Walker,  Anne was raised in Niagara Falls, NY and a graduate of Niagara Falls High School. During the summers before going off to college she attended Ecole Champlain, a French language summer camp in Vermont.  She graduated from Vassar College and was an active member of PHI BETA KAPPA. She received her Master ‘s  degree in Education at Columbia Teacher’s College, New York, and was  initiated as a member of Kappa Delta Pi. She was a member of the DAR.
 
Mrs. Gutterman married Arthur Gutterman a year after graduation from Vassar and resided in the greater New York area, then Stamford, CT from 1954 to 1968 until relocating to Hopkinton, MA in 1970 where she taught first and second grade children for 20 years. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Gutterman moved to Staunton, VA in 1993 where she volunteered as a teacher for English (ESL) as a 2nd language. She moved back to the Marlborough, MA area for 4 years in 2008 before relocating to ANRC in 2012.

Mrs. Gutterman was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Hugh Spencer of Hopkinton, MA, and a sister-in-law,  Elaine Meaney of Playa Del Ray, CA. She is survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law; Andrew and Louise (Robin) Gutterman of Staunton, VA, James H. Gutterman of Gig Harbor, WA and Peter W. Gutterman and Janice Foss of Pinole, CA. Also surviving is her grandson, Duncan Touchette of Marlborough, MA, her step-granddaughter, Amber Denny of Gig Harbor, WA, and her caring neighbor of many years Ruby Dowdy of Staunton, VA.  Aside from her family and many friends, she loved her pet cats, overseas travel and her Vassar Reunions.

A Memorial Service and burial of cremains will be at Rocklawn Cemetery in Marlborough, MA, at a date TBD. Memorial donations may be made to any local English as a 2nd Language (ESL) programs or to any animal rescue group.  Condolences may be sent to the family online at http://www.charltonandgroomefuneralhome.com/

  1. Anne was a wonderful teacher and loyal friend. Her enthusiasm for life was infectious! Her interests were varied and she never lost her ability to laugh at herself! Miss you Anne! P.
