Registration for boys and girls lacrosse, K-8, ends Dec. 15, according to the Nipmuc Youth Lacrosse Association, whose players participate in the Mass Bay Girls Lacrosse League (MBGLL) and the Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League (MBYLL).
The mission of both programs is not only to teach the “fastest sport on grass,” but to emphasize fun and good sportsmanship, according to the Mendon-Upton organization. In 2016, 80 towns were represented on more than 400 teams in MBGLL, and MBYLL is one of the largest youth lacrosse leagues in the United States, comprising more than 160 communities in the Commonwealth. Lacrosse, a favorite pastime of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, is the fastest-growing team sport in the United States, CBS and other news outlets have reported. Forty-two four-year colleges introduced varsity programs in 2015, and another 29 were expected to launch this year, according to a report on Boston.com.
The local youth program is typically a three-day a week commitment once everyone is outside on the fields, said Craig Lange, association president. Schedule specifics will be available in late February, and indoor practice once a week will start in March.
