With the help of the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission, the town of Upton has been working on how to mediate the impact on the town if the proposed casino in Milford is granted. Recently Upton, through their attorney, reached out to Foxwoods directly and advised them the town wanted to sit down and discuss being designated a “surrounding community.”
At the Tuesday October 15 Board of Selectmen meeting Chairman Jim Brochu said Upton had received news related to this request. Brochu said,”We received an email through Kopelman and Paige (the town’s attorneys), saying Foxwoods had sent a letter formally designating Upton as a surrounding community.”
The town would need to send a letter signifying its assent to this distinction within 10 days.
Brochu said this was “good news” for the town of Upton. The selectmen noted that they were pleased with the designation and voted unanimously to send the letter.
Upton faces several impacts on the community should the proposed 980,000 square-foot casino slotted for the intersection of I495 and R16 in Milford be approved. The designation of “surrounding community” means Foxwoods would work with the town to help reduce the financial stress/impact on the community.
