The Upton Board of Selectmen voted to suspend the South Street Gravel Permit immediately at the November 12th Board of Selectmen’s meeting for unspecified reasons.
Selectman Fleming said there has been some information brought to light which is making him reluctant to move forward, ” I am reluctance based on some history and validated information brought to the board.”
Member Picard agreed, “I’m disappointed in this applicant they know this is a very public issue and the residents are very sensitive and we have been talking about the new permit since June. Some recent issues are not even meeting the current permit.” Picard felt so strongly about whatever the issues were he was willing to make a motion.
Chairman Brochu concurred with his fellow members saying, “It is disappointing when we have a signed agreement by both parties and the simplest terms of that agreement cannot be followed. It is very disappointing. I would entertain a motion.”
Member Picard then made a motion to suspend the gravel permit and open it up for reevaluation on December 3, 2013 the motion passed unanimously.
I don’t understand why this is such a big issue. The gravel pit has been a legal source of commerce for a long time. It doesn’t matter whose family owned, owns or operates the business, how long they owned it, and it shouldn’t matter who did what for who- whenever. It is a legal, lawful business that has the right to engage in commerce. Why should those who came after and built their mansions on that road knowing full well that the business operated out of the gravel pit have the ability to dictate how, or when lawful commerce is engaged, or the manner it is engaged with. Reasonable conditions for that commerce put forth by the town government is expected and should be balanced between the needs of the business owner, and residents who came after the fact. Personal feelings of the Board (disappointment) or any other “feelings” by government officials should be kept to themselves, and not transmitted to the public as it may cause an unfair and negative influence against the business owner.
The speeding is from the people who live there. Its not from the trucks! Do you realize how hard it is to get a truck up to speed with the amount of curves on the road, plus the size of the truck?
It makes me sick to see how the YUPPIES of Upton and the Not in My Backyarders are doing for to this family. This family has done countless things for the town of Upton. From burning trees that were infested, to allowing the police department to target practice down there, to donating the sewer gravel to St Gabriels so it didnt have to pay an expensive price. Not to mention how many people have had to call this family on Christmas, Thanksgiving and at 2 in the morning because they ran out of oil, or their furnace died. They left their family to help yours. This family is trying to make a mear profit to put a meal on their table for their children. Isnt that what everyone is trying to do?
Not to mention, closing this down because they ran on some holidays? Seriously, how many other people worked holidays! It makes me sick to think that these owners have bent over backwards to help the town of upton so much and this is what they get in return! SAD!!!!!
This is nauseating! Oooo they worked on a holiday. How many others worked on holidays? All the yuppies need to realize this family has been here for centuries! They have helped sooo many in this town and this is the way you repay them? St Gabriels wouldnt of been built with out the donation of sewer gravel from this family, trees that needed to be burned would not of been. Not to mention how many people called this family when there oil ran out or furnace wouldnt start and they left their families to come help you. This is beyond ridiculous and makes me sad to see what this town has become!
Yea, less speeding traffic on South Street !
The speeders are residents
