The Town of Grafton and some residents had complained to the Grafton Upton Railroad that excavation taking place at the 42 Westboro Road site, which is near Big Bummet Brook and Pratts Pond, might be a threat to the environment. Of particular concern was the nearby aquifer which supplies drinking water to some residents in Grafton.
After insepction of the site the MassDEP notified Grafton Upton Railroad no environment issues of concerns were found. Philip Nadeau, chief of the Wetlands Protection Program wrote in a letter to Grafton Upton Railroad, “The department found the site at the Riverfront area and buffer zone to be very stable with no potential of erosion of the soils from the site into Big Bummet Brook or Pratts Pond” and “Department staff did not find any environment issues of concern at your site.”
