Milford Doubles Down on NO – Foxwoods Casino Rejected

casinoOn Tuesday November 19 residents of Milford took to the ballot box to decide whether to welcome the proposed $1 billion Foxwoods Resort Casino and doubled down on no. Milford voted 2 to 1 against the casino.  Of the 9,846 voters who cast ballots  6,361 votes were cast against the casino and 3,480 in favor.  The town saw a 55 percent turn out of registered voters.

One Milford resident who spoke with Upton Daily was originally planning on voting yes for the Casino but changed his mind in the weeks leading up to the vote. “I was originally going to vote yes because I worked in the industry but then I decided Milford didn’t need it.” After learning the issues with the sewer and water he had concerns. But what ultimately swayed his vote was trust. “They didn’t have enough money and had to go find a partner at the last-minute. I kept thinking of the abandoned strip malls you sometimes see. You know they start to build it and then can’t finish it because they run out of money. When I went to the poll and looked at all the promises the casino was making I thought how are they going to keep those promises. There were a lot of promises.”

The town of Upton had several concerns with the proposed casino and the effect it would  have on the community.  Based on the location of the proposed casino Foxwoods had designated Upton a surrounding community in October.

Upton Daily readers agreed with Milford voters. Readers were polled if they would vote yes or no for the casino, 69 % were against the casino and 31% were in favor.
