State Hazmat and Clean Harbors Environment Services on Scene at Grafton Upton Rail Yard

The Upton Police Department is assisting the Upton Fire Department at 25 Maple Avenue at the Grafton/Upton Rail Yard, for a minor chemical spill. Hazmat regulations call for a 150′ evacuation from the spill site.

There is a strong odor in the area of the Rail Yard.

A State Hazmat Team and Clean Harbors Environmental Services are on scene.

Upton Police Chief Bradley reports residents are safe and there is no need to be concerned. He anticipates they will be on scene for a couple of hours.

No details were available on how the spill happened or what chemical was spilled.

Chief Bradley will issue a press release later this evening.

  1. *** “”According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), styrene is used to manufacture plastics and rubbers. Exposure to styrene could cause “headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, malaise, difficulty in concentrating and a feeling of intoxication,” the OSHA website said.

“The city said in a tweet Wednesday evening that the toxicity levels surrounding the immediate impact area were low, and that the chief concern was the “flammability of the styrene monomer.”

The Hopkinton site says the chemical was ‘styrene’. Don’t know if that’s true but if so a similar leak happened last month in Ohio. I took this from a news article on that spill..

  2. Excuse me eddie who is too cowardice to post a last name, but that is a United States Air Force Master Sergeant Vietnam Veteran who you are referring to as a “cry baby”. And he has seen enough stuff to know when we should be concerned and has every right to be concerned for his grand kids and kids living in this town. He has seen enough stuff to know when an entire town and community is being put in jeopardy so that a few can make a profit at our risk. West Texas has a very small amount of the same chemicals we have here in our town by the 100,000 gallon loads, so yeah there is reason to be very concerned. And that’s just the plain truth.

  3. I knew it, I knew it! It was only a matter of time that this would happen in our little community!! We have tried to stop this company from setting up in Upton for many years. This is outrageous. That’s why there are many signs saying “Stop the Tocxic chemicals.” Is this going to be another Texas? There are so many schools, senior center, condos right next door! We must stop this company now. They should be shut down. There is so much land available elsewhere, why are they here? Of course, the politicians and everybody “involved” in the company will just make it a “Minor” mishap.
