The missing pup the community fell in love with finally made her way home on Sunday January 6 after surviving a week in the extreme cold.

On Sunday morning Pilot’s owner Kelly received a call from the doggie day care where Pilot had escaped saying Pilot was spotted. When Kelly arrived she saw Pilot sitting on a rock. Kelly said she followed the instructions given to her by Granite State Dog Recovery which was to crouch down and wait. Kelly wondered  if Pilot would recognize her;  it’s very common for dogs who are in survival mode not to recognize their owners. “It seemed like a long time passed, as if we were in limbo, but it was probably just a few minutes.” Then it happened, Pilot spotted Kelly and ran directly to her.

Pilot had a few bruises and scrapes and had lost a few pounds.  Kelly said, “She was whimpering and sore,” but overall her condition was good considering what she had been through.

It was a long week for Kelly who searched for Pilot day and night in the subzero temperatures. Kelly said she couldn’t have gotten through it without the help of the community. “It was like Pilot was everyone’s dog.” People from Milford, Mendon, Hopedale, and Upton were out searching for her and passing out flyers. Residents let Kelly roam around their back yards and welcomed her into her home. Kelly said, “We are overwhelmed with how the community supported us.”

Kelly expressed how grateful she is for the services provided by Granite State Dog Rescue, “They do a great job and they are all volunteers.”

“We are thrilled, so happy Pilot is home and safe.”

Pilot is named in honor of Kelly’s brother who has passed away. Pilot resembles Kelly’s childhood dog, a dog her brother loved. She came up with the name Pilot because her brother was a pilot and loved to fly.
