At a Special Town Meeeting on February 24 Mendon resident approved the town negotiate a deal to install a solar panel array on town owned land on Route 16.
Mendon Selectman Mark Reil said he was pleased with the vote. “I think the residents realize that this is a good deal for Mendon. We have been listening to the residents of Mendon and they want to see an increase in revenue for the town without raising taxes and this is a step in that direction.”
The town of Upton and Blackstone Valley Regional Technical Vocational High School are interested in signing on to purchase power from the proposed plant.
Upton resident Lara Wahl thinks this is a wonderful opportunity. “I think this is a big step forward for our community. Anything that can save our town money while also ensuring a green planet for our children and future generations, while insuring independence from fossil fuels and from foreign oil is a triple win in my book,” said Wahl.
“I feel as though we should all make as much effort as possible to utilize renewable energy, it is irresponsible not to.” said Upton resident Tim Wagner. “I would be proud if Upton could come up with a plan as well,” said Wagner.
According to Mendon Selectman Reil this project will not cost the town of Mendon any money and will not put any pressure on town services. “We will see benefits from the lease revenue as well as a reduction in electricity costs for the municipality. This is an all around win win for the residents.” said Reil.
Reil said the lease still needs to be negotiated but Mendon should expect to see around $100,000 per year for around 25 years.
Mendon resident Christin Barnett also thought this move was in the right direction,”Stepping up and investing in renewable, green energy is necessary and vital. Everything else would be ignorant and foolish.”
