Sixty-three years ago today at approximately 4:30 p.m. the deadliest tornado in New England history formed over the Quabbin Reservoir. It began as a series of smaller funnels until it became a massive 1-mile wide F4 monster. The tornado lasted until about 5:45 PM. The storm traveled almost 50 miles and was on the ground for nearly 90 minutes. Officially, 90 people were killed with an additional 1,000+ injured. The tornado was still doing maximum damage when it moved through downtown Westborough.
A separate F3 tornado struck nearby communities of Sutton, Northbridge, Mendon, Bellingham, Franklin, and Mansfield at 5:45 p.m. on the same day.

My Dad was working in Worcester in 1953 while living in my hometown of Ashland. His carpool followed the tornado down Rt. 9 to the Fayville section of Southboro at which time it hooked right towards Ashland. He was terrified for the safety of my Mom and 2 and 3 year old siblings. Luckily our street was not hit. Others, in Fayville weren’t so lucky.
