Several years ago Upton won the “Best Voting Community” award from the Senator Louis Bertonazzi Foundation. This year’s contest will end with the November Presidential election, and at this point Upton is at the top of the list with 32.99%. The prize for coming in first is a check for $1,000 to be used towards election in the future and voters of the community will be awarded a large banner proclaiming the town’s outstanding display of citizenship.
“We’d love to come in first again and show Upton’s dedication to citizenship,” said Town Manager Blythe Robinson.
With only the September Primary and November Election left, the contest is nearing an end. The 19 towns that Senator Bertonazzi represented in the House and Senate are to this point very closely grouped which means that any town could win with a good turnout in the upcoming elections.
Five towns; Upton, Douglas, Westborough, Mendon and Hopedale lead the pack at this point after having traded positions in the three completed elections. Eight towns; Auburn, Milford, Webster, Sutton, Bellingham, Dudley, Grafton and Northbridge make up the middle group of communities. And six towns; Oxford, Charlton, Southbridge, Uxbridge, Blackstone and Millville trail the field.
