During the October 4, 2016 Upton Selectmen meeting the Town Manager, Blyth Robinson, announced the Upton Library is not ready to take advantage for a state grant to build a new library.
The Library Feasibility Committee was charged with finding the best option for getting an improved library facility and was pursuing a state grant program which would have offered significant state funding.
Unfortunately the deadline for the grant was this month and the sites which were available for new construction were ruled out as possibilities.
According the Robinson the Feasibility Committee has now disbanded.
So it’s back to the drawing board for the Library Trustees who will review other paths during their November 7 meeting. Options they may consider include updating the facility they currently occupy or possibly finding another location.
Residents and town officials of this town really need to address the parking problem it has. I agree that it didn’t make sense to lose the parking at the playground by VFW. There is practically no parking along rte140. No parking along Hartford Ave North. There is not even enough parking near the newly opened Town Hall. Who is working on this? You risk your life to get your hair cut or stop at the Souper. The Uni Bank/ Honey Farms plaza is a real danger & mess. The Post Office has way too few spots… You get the picture. Several town intersections have 5 – 6 streets, not the usual 4. I’m not an expert, of course, but traffic lights, rotaries, caution lights. Peoole slowing down would be great. I am one of the people in the audience who agreed with the only member at the Council on Aging… The library should not be attached to a Senior Center. We sing songs, play indoor volleyball, holler out at Bingo, watch movies, talk during knitting…. NOT the quiet atmosphere that a library needs. Someone should have done a little advance research on the requirements of the grant to avoid spinning wheels and wasting peoples ‘ valuable time.
