Letter: Making a decision for our “community”

Over the last weeks, I have read and heard many perspectives in regards to the recent recertification of the MURSD school budget and discussions around the potential to have a joint town meeting. Letter: Seeing through the weeds

Submitted by Mendon resident Jay Washburn I recently read a letter in the Crier which I thought asked a good question. Why would a school district with declining enrollment need an override to stay afloat? Although the writer’s numbers were a tad off, per Massachusetts DOE numbers district enrollment declined by 354 students since FY10, the question itself remains a good one and deserves an answer. Southwick’s Zoo announces 50th anniversary special event dates

The zoo’s humble beginnings trace back to the 1930’s with Justin Southwick’s collection of exotic birds. The collection began to attract visitors, so he placed a donation box at the entrance of his farm in 1956. Southwick Wild Animal Farm Inc. was incorporated in 1965. Local Boys Earn Black Belt

On April 4 Andrew Page (13, on left) and Shamus Birdsey (13 on right) earned their 1st degree (adult) black belts in Kenpo. They have been studying Nick Cerios Kenpo under Sensei Bill Rowe for the past 5 years at Family Karate in Bellingham (http://familykarate.biz/).  They are the first students of Sensei Bill Rowe, along with his son tommy, that have achieved the rank of black belt. The test was a five hours long and required that they spar with multiple people at the same time. … [Read more...]

Open Burning Permits 2015

The Upton Fire Department has announced Open Burning Permits for 2015 are available from January 15 through May 1. Residents may apply in person at the Upton Fire EMS Headquarters seven days a week from 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The seasonal cost of a burning permit is $10.
